Central Ideas and Details — SAT practice questions
SAT Reading and Writing items on Central Ideas and Details present a brief passage, often a science note or a historical sketch, and require the student to name the passage’s controlling idea or a fact the text actually states. The student has to hold the whole account in view rather than locking onto a colorful example, a researcher’s name, or a single supporting scene. Questions usually ask which option best states the main idea or which detail the text supports. Answer choices are close paraphrases; the traps overgeneralize, contradict a contrast in the passage, or elevate a supporting detail into the central claim.
