Identifying controls, variables, and hypotheses on the ACT Science test means reading an experiment and naming what was changed, what was measured, what was held constant, and what researchers set out to test. A student must distinguish the independent variable from the dependent variable, recognize the control group, and match a prediction to the study design. Questions sit beside a table or figure and ask which quantity was manipulated, which was held constant, or which statement is the hypothesis. Common traps include swapping the measured outcome for the factor being changed or picking a conclusion instead of the hypothesis.
