How the ISEE Upper is scored

On the ISEE Upper, results are reported as a Stanine from 1 to 9, with 1 the lowest band and 9 the highest. Each multiple-choice question has 4 answer choices, and a wrong answer does not cost extra points, so unanswered items and incorrect marks are treated the same for scoring purposes. Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, and Mathematics Achievement each receive their own Stanine. Students should attempt every question they can reasonably work, since guessing among the remaining choices cannot lower the reported Stanine beyond what an omitted item would produce.

  • Stanine 1–9 a 1–9 band; 5 is average
  • 4 answer options per question
  • Nothing is deducted for a wrong answer

What the app estimates

As you practise, the app keeps an estimate of your ability per section and maps it onto the Stanine scale. It is the app's own estimate from your answers, not an official conversion table.
